So here’s something that crossed my mind not too long ago — what actually happens to your CCTV cameras when the power goes out? You’ve got this whole security setup at home or your business, and then boom, the electricity cuts off. Are you still protected, or are those cameras now just fancy plastic decorations on your wall?

It’s honestly a question more people should ask before investing in a security system. Because finding out the answer after a break-in during a power cut is not a great way to learn this lesson.

Let me break it down for you in plain terms.

 

The Short Answer: It Depends on Your Setup

Not all CCTV cameras are built the same. Some will go completely dead the moment the power cuts off. Others are designed with backup options that keep them running. The difference usually comes down to what type of camera you have and whether you’ve planned for this kind of situation.

Cameras That Go Dark During Outages

So PoE cameras aren’t inherently backup-power-friendly, but they can be, with the right setup. A lot of businesses go this route because it’s clean, centralized, and easy to manage.

 

What About the Recordings?

This is one area where folks tend to overlook the fact that not only can your camera tape keep going during power cuts but what about the video, right? If you’re going for a DVR or NVR which also loses power, your videos could be not getting turned into files even when your camera is still technically on.

Going cloud is the right solution for this issue. Provided that your camera gets power (by battery or UPS) and some kind of internet (mobile data as a backup, perhaps), the videos are sent straight to the cloud and you don’t lose them.

Conversely, if everything is done locally and your storage device is also not working, you may end up with a lapse in your video footage precisely at the time when you were in need of it the most.

 

Does Night Vision Still Work?

This is a real simple one, as long as the camera is operating (be it through battery, solar, or UPS), night vision will be perfectly functional. The IR LEDs that facilitate night vision are integrated into the camera unit. Thus, regardless of what powers the camera, it will keep on working during the night.

On the contrary, lack of power sometimes turns places into complete darkness, thereby making night vision system even more of a necessity. The camera is totally independent of external light in performing its function.

Consider cloud storage. Local storage is usually good enough, but with cloud backup you are secure even if your local system is hacked or fails.

Look into solar or battery cameras for outdoor spots. These are now affordable and genuinely reliable. For outdoor cameras especially, going off-grid makes a lot of sense.

Test your setup periodically. Unplug your cameras from the main power (safely) and see what actually happens. Don’t assume things are working — verify it.
